We understand that, since the beginning of this current administration, the concern and anxiety may be high among immigrant communities. Recent news of “expedited deportation” adds to the concerns for your safety, so we want to inform you of what to do if ICE shows up at your home or workplace.

We want to remind you that you have rights and must be prepared and informed.

Your Rights if ICE Approaches you or your loved ones.

✅ You have the right to remain silent – You do not have to answer any questions about your immigration status. You can say, “I am exercising my right to remain silent.”
✅ You have the right to refuse entry – Do not open the door unless ICE presents a valid judicial warrant (signed by a judge).
✅ You have the right to a lawyer – Do not sign anything without speaking to an attorney first. You can say, “I want to speak to a lawyer.”
✅ You have the right to refuse a search – ICE cannot search your belongings or home without a proper warrant.
✅ Stay calm and do not run – This could be misinterpreted as suspicious behavior.

What to Do If ICE Stops You on the Street:

  • Ask if you are free to go. If they say yes, walk away calmly.
  • If you are detained, ask to speak to a lawyer and do not sign anything.
  • Do not provide false documents or lie about your status.

If You Are in an Immigration Process:

  • Carry copies of your receipt notices (such as pending applications with USCIS). This can help show that you are in the process of legalizing your status.

If You Are a Green Card Holder:

  • Carry your Green Card and a copy of your approval notice to prove your lawful status.

If You Are a U.S. Citizen:

  • Carry your U.S. passport or passport card as proof of citizenship.
  • We strongly recommend applying for a passport card so you do not need to carry your passport book daily.

Plan Ahead:

  • Keep a copy of your Attorney’s Business Card or Information in your wallet.
  • Keep an emergency contact list and have a plan in case of detention.
  • Inform a trusted person about your legal situation and whereabouts.
  • Keep copies of important documents in a safe place.

And if you do not have an attorney yet, it is time to hire one! You can make an appointment with one of our associates here. We are here to support and guide you through this process!
